Cookies

We use three categories: necessary, functional and analytics. Functional and analytics are off until you turn them on.

Necessary

These are set because the thing you asked for does not work without them. They need no consent and cannot be switched off.

  • Sign-in: a session cookie set when you sign in, readable only by our server, that lasts 30 days from your last visit. Beside it a marker cookie, 7d.s, holding only the figure 1 for the same period, so the page can tell it is signed in without asking the server. A third cookie remembers which sign-in method you used last, for 30 days, so the form can offer it first.
  • Checkout: two entries in your browser's local storage that carry a chosen competition and quantity for two hours, and an order in progress for thirty minutes, across sign-in and the payment page.
  • Your cookie choice: the record of what you chose on the banner, in local storage, kept until you change it or clear your site data.
  • Offline page: a copy of the page shown when you have no connection, with its stylesheet, font and icon, kept in your browser's cache storage by the site's service worker and replaced when the site is updated. No page you visit and nothing about you is stored there.
  • Alerts: if you turn on draw alerts, your browser creates an address that notifications for this device are sent to, which we store against your account until you turn them off, and a local-storage note, 7d-push-seen, holding only the time your browser last confirmed that address. If you close the card that offers alerts, a second note, 7d-alerts-card, records that so it is not shown again.
  • Sign-in with Google: when the sign-in form is shown, Google's sign-in script is loaded from Google so that its one-tap button can appear, and Google may read its own cookies for that.
  • Security: the Turnstile check on the sign-in form, the ticket lookup and a free entry is run by Cloudflare and may set Cloudflare's own cookie on its own domain for the length of the check.
  • Payment: the payment form is loaded from DNA Payments, our payment provider, and sets that provider's own cookies for the duration of the payment.
  • Error reports: if a page fails, a report goes to Sentry. Nothing is stored in your browser for it, and the report carries no cookie, no keystroke and no recording.

Functional

The theme you choose. If you pick light, dark or system from the theme switch, the choice is written to local storage under the key theme so the next page opens the same way. Nothing is written until you pick one. Switching this category off removes the stored choice; choosing a theme again stores it again.

Analytics

We count visits and the steps of an entry with PostHog, hosted in the EU. What is counted: pages viewed, a competition viewed, a quantity chosen, a sign-in started or finished, whether an answer was right (never which option), a payment started, an entry confirmed, a checkout refused and why, and a panel opened. Addresses are sent without their query string, one-time links are cut out, email addresses are masked, and nothing is sent from the admin area. No heatmaps, and no clicks or keystrokes are counted as events.

Unless you accept analytics, you are counted without a cookie and without anything stored in your browser: PostHog derives a key from your address, browser and the day, with a salt it discards daily, so you cannot be followed from one day to the next. This counting is under the statistical-purposes exception in the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations; the information is used only to improve the site and is shared only with PostHog as our processor.

Declining analytics on the banner or in Cookie settings means no analytics cookie is set and nothing is stored in your browser. You are still counted in this cookie-free way.

If you accept analytics, PostHog sets a cookie, ph_ followed by our project key, for 365 days, with matching entries in local storage, so your visits are counted as one visitor. If you are signed in, the visitor is linked to your internal account id, never your email, and PostHog records your approximate location from your address. A local-storage note, 7d-sign-in-started, is kept for an hour so a sign-in that returns from Google or Apple can be counted once. Withdrawing consent removes the cookie, every PostHog entry in storage and that note.

If you accept analytics, PostHog also records your visit as a session replay: how pages looked, where you moved, clicked and scrolled, so we can see where the site gets in the way. Everything typed into a form is hidden before it leaves your browser, as is any email address on the page; addresses are cut as above, and nothing is recorded in the admin area. No console messages or network requests are recorded. Without analytics consent nothing is recorded, and withdrawing consent stops the recording at once.

Managing your choices

The banner offers Decline and Accept all as equal buttons, and Choose categories for each one separately. Nothing but Necessary is on until you say so.

Change your mind at any time from Cookie settings in the footer. Your choice is kept in your browser, not on our servers, so clearing site data or using another browser asks again.

We set no advertising cookies and no cookies for anyone else's marketing. If that ever changes, it will be a new category on the banner, off by default, and never bundled into Accept all without being named.
